Here is a very simple to make healthy dal with very few ingredients. The best part is this is a 'zero oil recipe' and so it is such a comfort food for all, kids and grown ups equally. The addition of coconut milk adds a nice flavor to the curry and makes it very appetizing. The yellow color of dal combines with coconut milk to give a very delectable colored curry that makes it look very appealing. It is definitely easy to make, here you gotta dump in all the ingredients pressure cook it and then finally pour in the coconut milk and cook till done, doesn't it sound easy peasy and fuss free? Serve with some spicy side-dish or some papads and enjoy a very satisfying platter.
INGREDIENTS
Serves 3 peopleTotal Preparation Time - 30 minutes
- Yellow moong dal / Paasi paruppu / Green gram dal - 100 grams
- Coconut milk - Extracted from half of a coconut
- Tomato - 2
- Coriander - A handful
- Garlic pods - 5 (peeled)
- Green chilli - 1 (slit into two)
- Garam masala - 1/8 tsp
- Pepper powder - 1/4 tsp
- Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
- Roasted cumin seeds - 1 tsp (take 1 tsp of cumin seeds and crush it slightly then dry roast it on a medium flame for a few seconds or until you get a nice flavor. Do not let it brown or change color)
PREPARATION METHOD
- Wash moong dal well in water. Drain water and add it into a pressure cooker.
- Pour water until there is 2 inches water above the dal. Now add chopped tomatoes, slit green chillies, cumin seeds, crushed garlic pods, coriander leaves and salt. Stir well and close with the lid. Place the cooker whistle or regulator once the steam/pressure oozes out of the nozzle. Then pressure cook on low flame for 10 minutes.
- Then remove from flame and wait until the pressure gets released completely. Then open the lid and check whether the dal has cooked well. (always open the regulator or whistle before opening the lid, even if there is some steam locked inside the cooker it will get released through the nozzle and will avoid mishaps)
- Then place the cooker on flame once again, (without the lid) after it starts to boil, pour coconut milk into it. Then add garam masala, pepper powder and roasted cumin seeds, then taste and add salt if needed.
- Once the coconut milk gets mixed up well with the dal (takes about 3 to 4 minutes) and when the raw smell of garam masala leaves remove from flame.
- Serve hot with rice and papads!!
TIP 1: Use only fresh coconut milk for the preparation to get the best taste. Never use coconuts that are almost dry. extract milk from fresh coconuts as far as possible.
TIP 2: This dal does not stay well for more than a day, as we have added coconut milk it will spoil after a day. So if you want to store the leftover, store in refrigerator and use the next day.
TIP 3: You can add some crushed ginger if you like its flavor. Also season it of you wish to.
