Chana Dal Gravy / Kadalai Paruppu Kulambu

Almost every Indian homes include lentils in their dish some way, it is tasty and also healthy. Chana dal gravy is a yummy recipe prepared in my own style!! It is so yummy because I have made the gravy with two different dal varieties, Green gram dal also known as mung dal and Chana dal. It goes well with Chapathi and Roti varieties also with rice. Green gram dal is very good during pregnancy and lactation, chana dal is a good source of protein, various minerals and dietary fiber that helps lower cholesterol. It is healthy and yummy so why not try this dish.






I have explained two types of cooking method, 


INGREDIENTS

  1. Chana dhal - 1/2 cup
  2. Green gram dal - 1/2 cup
  3. Big onions - 1/2
  4. Tomatoes - 1/2
  5. Coconut  - 5 pieces (1 inch long) or Grated coconut - 5-6 spoons
  6. Green chillies - 2
  7. Coriander leaves - Few
  8. Curry leaves - Few
  9. Garlic pods - 2
  10. Ginger - 1 inch long piece
  11. Pepper balls - 1 spoon 
  12. Cumin seeds - 1 spoon 
  13. Mustard Seeds - 1/2 spoon 
  14. Turmeric powder - A pinch
  15. Asafoetida - A pinch
  16. Salt
  17. Oil - 4 spoons 

PREPARATION METHOD

  • Make a fine paste of the following and keep aside; 
    • Coconut + Pepper balls + Green Chillies

  • Pressure cooker method

    • In a pressure cooker add chana dal and green gram dal. Now add water so that there is 2 inches of water above dal.
    • Add chopped tomatoes, prepared paste, chopped coriander, ginger, chopped garlic, salt, turmeric powder and stir well.

    • In another pan add oil, after it heats up add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, and chopped onions fry well.
    • Add this to the dal mixture and stir well.
    • Close the lid and lit the flame. (lit the flame only now)
    • Put weight after the steam oozes out of the cooker nozzle and cook for 15 minute.
    • Open the lid after 10 minutes and serve!!!

  • Normal Pan method
    • In a pan add chana dal and green gram dal. Now add water so that there is 3 inches of water above dal.
    • Lit the flame. 
    • Add chopped tomatoes, prepared paste, chopped coriander, ginger, chopped garlic, salt, turmeric powder and stir well.
    • In another pan add oil, after it heats up add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, and chopped onions fry well.
    • Add this to the dal mixture and stir well.
    • Cook for 30 minutes.
    • Serve!!

Tip : You can also make with any one of the dal and also with Toor dal.

Yummy chana dal gravy / kadalai paruppu kulambu is ready, Serve with soft chapathi, poori, naan, rice and roti varieties. You will love its deliciousness
