Mutton Kothukari masala is a super delicious dry masala made with minced meat and is one of my most favorite. The taste is too good and is also spicy, goes well as sides with sambar, rasam or dal rice and also with Pooris, Chapatis and Rotis. This is my Mom's special and I have adopted this version from her. Addition of chopped cabbage makes it too yum but you can avoid it if you wish. Earlier I had discussed another delicious recipe with minced chicken click here to check it out. Now lets see how to make this delicious kothukari masala.
INGREDIENTS
(Serves 2)
- Minced mutton - 150 grams (If you don't have minced meat take 150 grams of boneless lamb or mutton pieces and mince well using a Blender/Mincer)
- Chopped onions -2 spoons
- Chopped cabbage - ½ cup
- Coconut - 1 small piece (2 inch long piece)
- Ginger - 1 small piece (½ inch long)
- Garlic pods - 1
- Green chillies - 2 (slit into two halves)
- Red chilli powder - 1 spoon
- Turmeric powder - Few pinches
- Cumin seeds - ½ spoon
- Mustard seeds - ¼ spoon
- Skinned Black gram/Urad dal/Ulutham paruppu - ¼ spoon
- Salt - As per taste
- Oil - 5 spoons
PREPARATION METHOD
- Wash minced meat well in water and set aside.
- Make a fine paste of the following ingredients using a Blender and set aside;
(Coconut paste)
1. Coconut piece - 1
1. Coconut piece - 1
2. Ginger – 1 small piece
3. Garlic pods – 1
Sprinkle some water to make the paste
Sprinkle some water to make the paste
- Heat a pan/wok and add oil, after it heats up add mustard seeds and let it splutter then add the curry leaves, skinned black gram, cumin seeds, chopped onions, slit green chillies and saute well.
- When the onions turn translucent add in the red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt and stir well.
- Then add chopped cabbage and saute for a minute.
- Now add the minced mutton, coconut paste and saute for 2 minutes on low flame.
- Add water until the mince mutton mixture gets immersed well.
- Cook on low flame until all the water evaporates and the minced mutton gets cooked well.
- Remove from flame and serve!!
TIP 1: If you want it to have a semi-gravy consistency add 1/2 cup of coconut milk after the water evaporates and boil for another 2 minutes.
TIP 2: Check if the minced mutton has got cooked well or else add some more water and cook till it turns tender and gets cooked well.
TIP 3: Chopped cabbage helps increase the quantity and also enhances the flavor of the recipe. Still if you wish you can avoid it.
