Roasted Hard Boiled Egg / Egg Roast

Roasted hard boiled egg, is a tasty side-dish that can be made in a few minutes without taking too much of effort. It goes well as sides with rasam rice, sambar and dal. In my version I have used gram flour to make masala adhere well to the eggs and also to enhance flavor. You can try without adding gram flour too and also try some new versions. I have prepared it less spicier but you can make your roast spicier by adding more red chilli powder and pepper powder. Very common ingredients are enough to prepare egg roast. Eggs are so well rich in high quality proteins and the right kind of fat we need, also these are very handy ingredients that helps us make great recipes in just minutes. Some may avoid the egg yolks for health reasons, but it it the yolk that contains the quality proteins, instead of totally avoiding the yolk just take them once in while to relish its benefits; obviously a balanced diet is always the best not a fat-less diet. Now lets see how to make this scrumptious egg roast.

INGREDIENTS

Makes sides for 2 people
Total Preparation Time - 15 minutes

  1. Eggs - 2
  2. Red chilli powder -   ¼ spoon (2 grams)
  3. Gram flour / Besan - ½ spoon (4 grams)
  4. Cumin powder - A pinch
  5. Pepper powder - A pinch
  6. Salt - As per taste (1 gram will do)
  7. Mustard seeds -  ¼ Spoon
  8. Curry leaves - Few (Optional)
  9. Oil - 5 spoons

PREPARATION METHOD

  • Take a saucepan add the eggs and pour water until it gets immersed well. Boil for 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile; Take all the following ingredients in a bowl mix well, sprinkle some water and make a paste out of it.
(Masala paste for applying on the eggs)
1. Red chilli powder - ¼ spoon (2 grams)
2. Gram flour / Besan - ½ spoon (4 grams)
3. Cumin powder - A pinch
4. Pepper powder - A pinch
5. Salt - As per taste (or 1 gram)
(Sprinkle some water and make a thick paste)
  • Now take the hard boiled eggs, de-shell it and slice into two halves.
  • Place some masala paste on the yolk side (sliced side) of the egg and spread well. If the masala does not spread well sprinkle some more water to the masala paste and mix well. Spread on only one side of the egg.
  • Heat a pan, add oil and after it heats up; splutter mustard seeds and curry leaves. Then add the hard boiled eggs with the masala side facing the oil and leave it undisturbed for a minute.
  • Then slowly and carefully turn sides and let it sit for a few seconds.
  • Remove from flame and serve.

TIP 1: If the masala does not get easily spread add some more water to the masala paste and then use it for spreading. But don't add too much water, it may make the paste watery and avoid the masala from getting adhered to the eggs.

TIP 2: You can avoid mustard seeds and curry leaves and directly add the eggs.

TIP 3: Turn the sides of the eggs gently while frying or else the layer will just get peeled off; so wait for a few minutes before you turn the sides. Don't keep stirring or tossing.

Can you see the mustard has cracks on it, it shows it has spluttered well!! While tempering in any curry see that the mustard splutters well; it gives good flavor to the recipe!!

Yummy roasted hard boiled eggs are now ready!! Serve as sides or starters!!
