Sweet Lime Peda | Mosambi Peda | Saathukudi Paalkova | Peda Using Milkmaid

Peda is a soft Indian sweet, prepared with milk solids or milk or condensed milk and flavored with cardamom powder or saffron. It is a rich festive sweet that is traditionally prepared in many North Indian homes and in Karnataka. Whereas we South Indians prepare the milk halwa or the paalkova which is almost similar to peda preparations, the only difference lies in the consistency and ingredients. These pedas look cute, tastes very delicious and are authentically prepared to serve friends, family and neighbors during any celebration. For a twist I have prepared it with sweet lime aka saathukudi or mosambi. I usually love citrus flavor so much and when I found the orange pedas at Sangeetha Priya akka's space wanted to give it a try. And there came a perfect occasion to try this recipe, it was her birthday and we a group of blogger friends decided to give her a virtual treat, where we would try any of her recipes and post it on our space, thereby giving her a virtual birthday party. She had prepared the sweet with oranges and you can see from her pictures how gorgeously it had turned out, I did not have oranges at hand so gave a try with sweet limes. It came out awesome with a mild mosambi flavor, it was a great treat. I topped the pedas with some melted chocolate and it was such a delight to taste. The best part was it was so easy to prepare and also not much time consuming. You can prepare the same or try with oranges too as in the original recipe. Am sure you are gonna love it!!

Hope this virtual treat brings atleast a smile to your face and am so glad about that.
Happy birthday Sangeetha Priya akka!! Hope life brings you more and more blissful moments and goodness!!

INGREDIENTS

Makes 8 pedas
Total preparation Time - 25 minutes
  1. Sweet Lime - 1 (or) Fresh sweet lime juice - 100 ml
  2. Condensed milk - 100 ml
  3. Milk powder - 3 tablespoons
  4. Milk - 30 ml
  5. Maida / Corn flour - 2 tablespoons
  6. Cardamom powder - A pinch
  7. Lemon yellow food color - A pinch
  8. Ghee - 2 tablespoons

PREPARATION METHOD

  • Cut sweet lime into half and squeeze out juice from it. You can use a juicer or even grind the pulp and strain to extract juice.
  • Place a pan on flame and pour the freshly extracted sweet lime juice. Let it come to boil.
  • Now pour condensed milk and stir well.
  • To a bowl add milk powder, maida (all purpose flour) or corn flour and pour some 30 ml of milk/water into it. Mix well to make a smooth paste. See that there are no lumps in it.
  • Pour this flour, milk powder paste into the pan and stir well.
  • Add food color, keep stirring and add a tablespoon of ghee into it.
  • When the mixture becomes thick and starts to leave the pan's sides add the remaining ghee and stir well until it forms a single mass.
  • Remove from flame and let it cool. Then grease your palms with a little ghee and roll into balls and flatten it, or make into shapes that you wish.
  • I flattened it, made a small impression in the center and filled it with melted chocolate (I used dairy milk). You can skip this step. Its purely optional.
  • Serve!!

TIP 1: Use fresh sweet lime juice for better taste. I got 100 ml of juice from one sweet lime, I did not dilute the juice with water.

TIP 2: You can add a pinch of salt to enhance sweetness. Salt and cardamom powder is optional.

TIP 3: Condensed milk and milk powder is already sweet enough and so extra sugar is not necessary here.

TIP 4: Do not cook on high flame, the ingredients used here, milk powder and condensed milk, gets burnt easily so cook on a low flame, also a non-stick pan will work better.

Delicious and rich sweet treat is  now ready!! Serves as a dessert or gift it to your friends and relatives and surprise them!!
