Egg Masala Toast | Masala Egg Bread Toast | Indian Style Savoury French Toast

Egg masala toast is a brilliant breakfast or snack recipe; it is almost similar to the french toasts, but a savoury version of it. Here bread is dipped in a masala egg mixture and toasted over a tawa. There are many ways of making this toast and the following is the my method of making it. I use maida or wheat flour along with eggs to give the toast a thicker egg coating and make the ingredients get well bound to the bread. I add a few tablepsoons of vegetables randomly while making this toast, mostly I use any of these; carrots cabbages, beans, beets or even greens. Its totally customize-able, you add any vegetables in the egg mixture and coat the bread slices with it. It is easier to feed fussy kids with vegetables or greens this way.

Before we go to the recipe I'd like to share with you something I'm overjoyed about. Some of my recipes have got featured in Aval Vikatan kitchen a Tamil Magazine (November 2014 edition). I'm super excited about it and never guessed would get featured in such a reputable magazine along with other experienced & wonderful chefs and cooks :) And this toast was one among the 15+ recipes I shared there. Do grab a copy and check out the awesome magazine dedicated completely for food related articles and recipes.

INGREDIENTS

Makes two toasts
Total Preparation Time – 10 minutes
  1. Bread slices - 2 (I used sweet maida bread)
  2. Eggs -2
  3. Finely Chopped onions - 2 tablespoons
  4. Finely Chopped or Grated carrots - 2 tablespoons
  5. Garlic - 1 pod (sliced or chopped finely)
  6. Chopped coriander leaves - 1 tablespoon
  7. Curry leaves - Few
  8. Pepper powder / Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  9. Cumin powder - 1⁄4 tsp
  10. Maida / All purpose flour - 2 tablespoons (optional)
  11. Salt - As needed
  12. Oil (or) Butter - As needed

PREPARATION METHOD

  • To eggs add salt, chopped onions, chopped carrots, chopped garlic, chopped coriander leaves, curry leaves, pepper powder, cumin powder, maida and mix well so that there are no lumps in it.
  • Place a tawa on flame and wait until it heats up. Brush some oil or butter over it. If its non-stick then it is not necessary.
  • Now dip a bread piece in the egg mixture and coat with the masala. Place on the tawa and pour some more egg mixture over the bread.
  • Flip and pour some more egg mix. Then toast on both sides on low flame until the sides turn golden brown.
  • Remove from flame and serve hot with ketchup or chutneys.

TIP 1: Maida is just used to make the egg mix thick and also to help bond the egg mixture well with the bread. You can avoid it if you wish.

TIP 2: You can use finely chopped green chillies if you'd like your toasts spicier. But avoid if you are gonna serve it to kids, in that case pepper powder will be good enough.

  5. We eat a lot of French toast, so I'm happy to see this spicy and savory version. If you let the bread soak in the eggs for at least fifteen minutes, you don't need the maida.

You have a fantastic idea here, and congrats on the article!
