Pizza Dosa | How To Make Street Side Pizza Dosa At Home

Tasted this street side version of pizza dosa during a trip to Bangalore and loved it, wanted to taste the same in my native but didn't find any hotels or thallu vandi (street side stalls) that specialized in such kind of dosas, so I decided to make it at home. Got to know that this version is so popular in Mumbai also. This is not the regular version that you see on the internet but its quite different kind. Its not just a soggy dosa topped with some ketchup and pizza toppings but instead its crispy on the out and is packed with a very yummy cheesy filling on the inside. Tried to replicate the same but did not load it much with cheese like they do in the street sides. You can alter the same recipe according to your liking. I have also included a video recipe so it will be easy for you to follow :) Do check it out too! Lil one helped me with the platting and I'm super glad that she's interested in what momma does, also she loved this pizza dosa and that in itself is a big compliment as she is my biggest critique :) Most of the ingredients that I've used in the recipe will always be available in our pantry, and you don't need an oven! Its quite easy to prepare too, do try and let me know your feedbacks!

INGREDIENTS

(For 2 pizza dosas)
  1. Dosa batter - 1/2 cup
  2. Cheese cubes - 2 (grate an extra cheese cube for topping; optional)
  3. Onion - 1 (peeled and finely chopped)
  4. Ripe tomatoes - 2 (finely chopped)
  5. Garlic pods - 2 (peeled and finely chopped)
  6. Red chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
  7. Cumin powder - 3/4 teaspoon
  8. Pizza seasoning - 2 teaspoons
  9. Garam masala - A pinch
  10. Salt - 3/4 teaspoon
  11. Butter - 3 tablespoons
  12. Tomato ketchup -  2 teaspoons  (optional)

PREPARATION METHOD

  • Place a pan on flame and add 2 tablespoons of butter, after it heats up add chopped garlic, chopped onions and saute until onions seem cooked.
  • Then add chopped tomato and saute well. Mash the tomatoes as you saute.
  • Now add red chilli powder, cumin powder, pizza seasoning, salt and saute well.
  • After the raw smell leaves add garam masala and give a good stir. Pour some water about a few tablespoons and stir well. Cook for a few minutes on low flame until the masala seems to have blended well and the the masala should not smell raw.
  • Now add a cheese cube and mash it up well using the ladle. You can also grate and add it to the pan. Do according to your convenience.
  • Add the next cheese cube and mash well, then pour some more water (1/8 cup) and keep cooking.
  • The mixture should seem creamy and thick.
  • Now remove from flame and keep aside. (Add some ketchup to the masala if you want, but even without ketchup it will taste yum)
  • Then place a dosa pan on flame and pour a ladle of batter on the pan. Spread the dosa using the ladle.
  • Take a ladle of the prepared cheese masala and spread it all over the dosa using a flat dosa ladle.
  • Spread a tablespoon of butter on the sides of the dosa. You can use oil also but butter gives a nice flavor to the dish.
  • Make sure you do not burn the bottom side of dosa, you'll have to work pretty quick to avoid this and also make sure you do not cook over high flame.
  • You can add some grated cheese over the dosa now, but we have enough cheese in the masala and it will taste good enough. Still if you want to add some extra cheese you can do that.
  • Fold the dosa once the dosa seems cooked and remove from flame. You can either fold or roll and cut into pieces and serve.
